Before you land
Do these at home, on Wi-Fi. Your ticks stay on this phone only.
-
Maps, taxi apps and translation all need data. Be online the moment you land.
How
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your carrier.
- Buy a Korea data plan before you fly.
- Install it at home on Wi-Fi, following the provider's instructions.
- After landing, switch mobile data to that eSIM line.
Prefer a physical SIM or pocket Wi-Fi? Those are rented at the airport too.
-
Google Maps could not give us walking directions in Seoul. Naver Map can, and it has an English mode.
How
- Install NAVER Map from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open it and go to MY → Settings → Language → English.
- Save your hotel in the app so it is one tap away.
-
Hailing in the app means the driver already has your destination. No address mix-ups.
How
- Install k.ride, the app Kakao Mobility made for overseas visitors. It is in English and takes overseas credit and debit cards.
- Sign up and add your card before you fly.
- Save your hotel's Korean address in the Taxi Show Card as a backup.
-
One tap card for subway and bus. Faster than buying single tickets every ride.
How
- Get a rechargeable transport card (for example T-money) at the airport or a convenience store.
- Top it up before your first ride.
- Tap the reader when you get on, and again when you get off.
Card types and top-up options change. Ask the staff where you buy it.
-
Menus, signs and labels are often Korean only. Point your camera and read them.
How
- Install Papago, Naver's translation app.
- Try the camera (image) translation once at home so you know where it is.
- For fixed phrases, a Show Card is faster than typing.
-
Pick your route before you are tired, at the arrivals hall with luggage.
How
- Find the subway station nearest your hotel in Naver Map.
- Choose: airport railroad (AREX), airport limousine bus, or taxi. Check times and fares on the official sites below.
- Put your hotel's Korean address in the Taxi Show Card, just in case.
